Abraham, Margaret (2005). South Asian Immigrant Women's HIV/AIDS Related Issues: An Exploratory Study of New York City. (Co-authored with Roopa Chakkappan and Sung Won Park). Published by APICHA.

    • Silence around sex and sexuality in SA communities makes it difficult to address HIV/AIDS.
    • It is important to understand how women make decisions about their sexual and reproductive health needs and how a woman’s family plays a role in these decisions.
    • Cultural barriers to accessing HIV/AIDS related care include denial of the prevalence of risky sexual behaviors among South Asians, and fear of stigma and isolation from friends and family members.
    • Lack and health insurance and mistrust of government agencies are some structural barriers related to HIV/AIDS care.
    • Some suggestions to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention include:
      • Reducing stigma around sexuality through media and educational outreach in schools.
      • Increasing the community’s access to healthcare information and services
      • Building the community’s capacity to address HIV/STI related issues by educating and training members on HIV/AIDS awareness and providing them information on resources available.
