Medical and Health Research Association (2004). Cultural Influences on Family Planning Choices.

    • This report showed that Pakistani and Bangladeshi women who participated in the focus groups choose family planning to limit the number of children they have.
    • One reason for limiting number of children was the loss of extended family support after moving to the US.
    • SA women choose and prefer to include their husbands first when making choices about family planning and contraception.
    • Some study participants had concerns about contraceptive methods, with regards to their side effects, availability, and potential health consequences.
    • Religion did not play a large role in most women’s decision about family planning.  For some it was an influencing factor.
    • Recommendations include increasing education regarding birth control methods; provide family planning and contraceptive education for males; and conduct cultural training workshops for all staff, stressing the need to respect birth control choice and role of husband.
