Family History
Health

Ami K., 34, New York [Female]

My family has a very extensive history of heart disease, on both my mothers and my father’s side. As far as I know, it goes back about 2 or 3 generations, but it could go back further. My father passed away at the age of 32 with a very sudden heart attack. My grandfather died at 78 of a straightforward cardiac arrest. He was very healthy, absolutely fit, ran two miles every day, and still had a heart attack. My great grandfather climbed a fort in India and as he walked down he collapsed. They were all three physicians with no previous history and died of a heart attack. My mother’s side also has extensive cardiac disease. Her mother passed away with a heart attack and so did her mother’s brother and her mother’s sister. So I am extremely particular to make sure that I get things checked and if I have the slightest doubt, I go to a physician and check. I am 34 and I check my cholesterol levels, my blood levels, have a cardiogram, and touch wood, there is nothing. And I exercise. So, I think it is definitely important to be aware that this is in your family history and you could be a potential candidate. I definitely am very conscious about it because I think it is essential that as you age, you live an active and healthy life and take care of your body parts. It like an engine, it needs fuel from time to time. And make sure that you are conscious of what it takes to have good health.
