As an interpreter...
Other

LS, 30, New Jersey [Female]

I work as interpreter for children with special needs and their families. Often, I’m called upon to ass with the communication needs of a South Asian family and rely on my pool of South Asian interpreters. The problem I come across all the time is the difference in South Asian dialects. There are so many, depending on exactly which part of South Asian the family is from. As someone who is not South Asian, I tend to ask ignorant questions, like, 'do they speak Urdu or Hindi' as if those are the only two dialects to choose from. I really need help in learning about this fascinating group of people and the beautiful culture. I don't want to feel so ignorant anymore. So, I wanted to thank you for being part of this program and for making it available to us out in the field working daily with babies and children with special needs.
