Myths

What are myths?
A myth is a story or a belief, developed over time, started with traditions, opinions, experiences, perspectives, ideals, and even imagination, which eventually is presented as truth, but usually is false.

Myths about HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs):

  • I'm not at risk because I'm Desi (or Muslim, Hindu, Christian, etc)
  • South Asians don't get sexually transmitted infections
  • HIV/AIDS is a problem only in India, not for Indians in the United States
  • Hindu, Muslim, or Christians do not have pre-marital or extramarital sex
  • I don't need to use a condom since South Asians don't get STIs
  • If I ask for a condom, my partner will think that I have a problem
  • If a married woman gets HIV/AIDS, then it's because she couldn't please her husband and he had to go elsewhere
  • If you follow your culture and religion, you cannot get an STI
  • Information about STIs don't apply to me
  • If a girl asks too many questions or knows too much about sex, it means she has too much experience

Remember, these are all myths and they are all false. Get Informed.
